Carbon Cycle

In our garden the carbon cycle is involved in the process of photosynthesis. Below is a great link that has good animations explaining the process of photosynthesis. You can really see how the carbon atoms from carbon dioxide are rearranged to create new sugar molecules.

Check the link below to learn more about the carbon cycle:

This link below describes the role of the carbon cycle and climate change. Follow the animation and take the quiz for each lesson.

Carbon Cycle Questions:

1. List two abiotic factors shown in the diagram above
An abiotic factor is air. (Oxygen or Carbon Dioxide)

Another abiotic factor is fossil fuels. (carbon rich gasoline or oil)

Soil, temperature, sunlight, and water are other examples.

2. List two biotic factors shown in the diagram.

Plants
Animals
Insects
bacteria
ameoba
decomposers
fungi
mold
worms

3. Identify different ways in which carbon enters the atmosphere.
One way that carbon enters the atmosphere is through the process of photosynthesis. Plants take in the Carbon Dioxide and water to convert it into Sugar ( carbohydrates) and oxygen.

Fuels are burned and release Carbon Dioxide into the air. Combustion reactions produce lots of carbon dioxidel.

4. Identify different ways in which carbon is removed from the atmosphere.
One way that it is removed from the atmosphere is through respiration. Another way is that when a living organism dies, the carbon is released into the air (in the form of carbon dioxide)

5. Name two different compounds in the diagram that contain carbon.
One compound that contains carbon is sugar. Another compound that contains carbon is a fossil fuel.

Carbon is also found in Carbon Dioxide
